A day in Cedar Rapids and the CRANDIC Railway

On May 23, 2020 a friend and I went on a trip to Cedar Rapids over in Iowa. I have never saw the CRANDIC Railway so this was a new experience.

We checked out several yards & I photographed the CRANDIC ones as well as the locomotive area.

We later seen some switching downtown as well as a train made for IAIS coming out of a CRANDIC yard.

Also noticed an old railroad
Bridge that caught my eye and a ROW that is now a trail with a walking bridge over the UP mainline. This was once the ROW for the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern Railway from 1876 til 1903. Afterwards it was the ROW for the Rock Island Railroad. It is now the Hoover Nature trail.

While there saw a few other sites as well such as a park, power plant, UP railroad bridge as well as downtown and the Cedar River. We also saw some new ballast cars which was cool to see.

The weather was okay for some of the day but it did rain on and off. There was a Tornado Warning southeast of Cedar Rapids and one dropped down in the small town of Mechanicsville an hour after we drove through. We was caught in a storm with heavy rains and seen some wicked clouds from it.

All and all a good day with plenty
Of CRANDIC action and even caught a few UP manifests near Grand Mound, Iowa on the UP Clinton Subdivision. I had a blast and if you want short line action Cedar Rapids is a happening spot with the CRANDIC.
