Galena Illinois Central Depot
The Galena Depot which is situated along the current Canadian National Railway is a very old depot having been built in 1857. Today it is used for office space the last I heard. There hasn't been a passenger train since probably the 1960's. Yet it remains as a reminder to history and is one of many of Galena, Illinois's beautiful attractions.
Illinois Central built tracks from Warren to Scales Mound then to Galena in 1854 having reached Galena by October. In June 1855 tracks expanded to East Dubuque also in Illinois.
The Chicago Central & Pacific Railroad spun off the IC beginning operations in December of 1985 til IC repurchased the railroad in 1996. The CN railroad acquired control of the IC in 1998 & operations under this company began in July 1999. Today the CN runs atleast two trains daily.
Galena Depot:
It was built in 1857 and Ulysses Grant left for the White House from here by train.
