IAIS and NS two railroads I want more of!

Two railroads I want to photograph and film more of are the Iowa Interstate Railroad which is a class II railroad and Norfolk Southern which is a Class I Railroad both of which I have very few on as themselves.   I have  five of IAIS with NS power and one  which I nailed yesterday ( thank god) is  one with IAIS own power then one actual NS video.  I seem to never be in the area when either one are in the vicinity. I have tried to nail IAIS before a few times hoping to get lucky but come short. Okay not really since I end up filming some other railroad like BNSF or something so I rarely come away with nothing because if i faiil on one line I go hunting on another if I have the time and gas for it.  I even went up to the Quad Cities to try my luck but failed IAIS wise but i did see the train i filmed the day before at Chillicothe that IAIS took up with NS power there but their actual locomotives couldn't get a good shot and they were not moving.  I have tried for a while for an IAIS one.  I admit I've been slacking trying for NS and got lucky one day when I got one at Farmdale Road but the sun ruined that one....just my luck.  I have about the same amount of luck with NS than I do with TP&W at Farmdale Road but atleast I  caught NS but I've yet to nail a TP&W one there. I'll post up what videos and pictures I do have since i'm in the spirit of it plus in the mood for a blog so here we go....

Now here is the Northfolk Southern one i have on their line that takes it to Bloomington and elsewhere as well as the tracks at Farmdale Road.

Middle Grove- Rapatee Coal mine

This subject is about the coal mine at Middle Grove and Rapatee areas. I basically just know the years and also what Railroads served them but i did get to photograph the area of this so there is a general idea of this.   The Midland Electric Coal Company has several strip mines within Fulton and Knox Counties from the years 1933-1963 ( Fulton County, strip),1963-1967 (Knox County strip), and Peabody Coal Company which  opened in 1968 and closed around that time or 1969. The mine would open once again and be the Middle Grove-Rapatee mine in 1975 or 1976 under the Midland Coal Company I think.  It ran until 1988 but the last rail shipment was in or around 1986 by the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad.   Another company nearby or in this vicinity would be the Midstate Coal Company  which was a strip mine and operated from 1989-1996.  Over the decades it used the area railroads before 1960 it was the M&STL would would ship their coal and after it was Chi...

Fulton County, Illinois Ghost towns Part 1

Ghost towns are abandoned villages that since disappeared or are no longer the population they were in their hey day after an economic down fall, disaster or whatever.  For me I consider a ghost town a town that no longer exists but may or may not leave traces behind of it's existence.  Fulton County has a lot of old historical towns like Canton which was founded in 1825 and Lewistown which was founded  years before Canton.  These towns are example of towns that managed to make it despite economic disasters and natural ones. Former towns which have signs marking their location like Civer between Canton and Cuba and Tuscumbia around Bernadotte are examples of towns that didn't make it and ceased to exist and into oblivion of history.  The only thing that is exists is those two signs that mark the location.  It's sad in a way but it is what it is and people who lived in these areas did what they had to for survival of the time period so if they moved to other...

Two depot's two railroads - Cuba, Illinois.

In the small Fulton County community of Cuba, Illinois was once the location of two railroad depot's. Two companies crossed each other's tracks and both have their stories to tell I am certain of that. The first was the east to west TP&W line built back in the 1860s -70s timeframe. This once was a Class one railroad that travelled through several states. It had depot's along the way and once the mighty steam hauled passenger trains. This like the other railroad served area mines one being near Cuba. The TP&W depot  like the CB&Q was near where the elevator in Cuba is off Route 97. The depot's are long gone having been torn out probably by the 1970's or the 1980's at the latest. The second TP&W depot still exists but was moved over to Kolbe (Mapleton,Il) where the Keokuk Junction Railway now uses as an office by its car shop. TP&W went through changes after the seventies.
