New mayor election coming up in the city of Canton...
I see there is an upcoming election for the Mayor's seat in the city of Canton and so far that I know of three are running. They had a section about all three in video chat on separate threads on the Daily Ledger. I posted questions and responded to all three. Only one of those responded which says alot right there. I already know our current mayor could careless about the growth or bettering this town due to his inactions during this past term. The only thing that managed to be built here was an O'Reilly's auto parts store and the incoming Dunkin Donuts. Wow, this saves our town and adds alot of job and potential. Not. The mayor in another article went to say the clean up from last November's explosion down town is near the end. Oh really so is that why alot of buildings are still boarded up and the huge pile of rubble remains behind the Opera house. Are we just going to let that sit for years like Canton did in the past with the IH plant fire rubble. Are we about to bear witness to another eyesore that really makes our town look even more classier. How slow can investigations be if there still is one if that is the reason. I have no idea but everytime I drive by it seems like no progress has been made it the clean up of the Old Opera House.
Okay I can zip it about the Opera House it isn't exactly a main concern at the moment. My main concern is why hasn't this town grown, built, expanded it's options and lived up to the potential it deserves. It also needs more to do than shoveling food down your throat at the food joints, going to a church which some of us has zero interest in as some of us aren't interested in getting flat out drunk at the many taverns we have here. Other than Lakeland park and a lake to fish at there really isn't much to do unless you have money. We do got a library so atleast that does give people something to do if they like to read. The options are not wide here either you have to be a drunk or a religious person to be able to have stuff in this town to do and if you're neither then it's a very dull town. We could use some museums or something that can strike attention of people where they might want to visit or take their families too. A place to gather maybe that isn't associated with drinking or church might be a start. A movie complex would be great I guess and if they must attract food joints do something better than a Dunkin Donuts or another Pizza joint. How about a big community center for people to gather with various topics and events and a section can be for the historical aspect of this town and area. Canton has been around since 1825 almost two hundred years it has a rich history that could be explored with community events. The Railroad depot off Chestnut should be a railroad museum embracing the former railroad CB&Q/BN who used it not for city town meetings. I guess be lucky they haven't razed it I suppose. I would love to see a coal mine museum embracing the mining past here that is open all year or atleast an entire season. That is what I want but others might not feel that way. I would love this town to embrace the history more than it has been but I also want them to attract more things for the public can do than the same ole' same ole".
Entertainment aside now on to the development this town could use. Everyone knows job wise in Canton the best people will do is the local walmart or some fast food joint. If they are lucky they might try their luck at Cook Medical and get hired on but I really never hear them hiring so no idea. There is plenty of empty lots and spaces this town can attract development if they wanted too. We faced and are facing closures so there is empty spaces to fill. Part of the Harvestor property still has space to build and what about Enterprise Road. At one time there was talk of making it an industrial park of businesses but nothing panned out. We need to try to aim for potential warehouses and foundries to make this a manufacturing town again. It would benefit the people in town who don't want to drive thirty or more miles and maybe even bring back the railroad industry into this town. The KJRY would benefit maybe or have the potential and people here might have better chances at jobs that aren't at low wages. McDonalds isn't a career it's a stepping ground as are the other fast food joints. People need some more options than having to settle to less. Growth might bring this town back to life and bring back some interest in it as well as add jobs. If someone builds it might attract others and bring forth lots of potential we haven't seen in this town in many many decades. How people are happy with the past thirty or forty years and stand by not even saying anything I will never know? I guess like how I was and just think if they did no one will care. Even if this does go on deaf ears atleast I'm expressing my disproval and I encourage other residents to speak up or ask questions if the opportunity presents itself. I do know this we need change and we need it now. We cannot wait another few decades for someone to take the bull by the horns.
Who ever gets elected needs to step up their game and go to bat for this city. The current mayor doesn't seem to care so we need a change and elect someone who might have potential or atleast want to try. I asked a question if they will actually work on growth for this town and out of the three only one responded and it wasn't our current mayor. That right there speaks alot. We need someone who will listen and give people the chance to voice concerns not brush off people and do whatever. I do know this I won't be voting for our current mayor for another term. I want to see Canton improve not be kept held back from what it could be and should be.
